The arrival hall is brighter and larger than it looked in every video Maya watched at home.
People stream around her with practiced purpose. Wheels click over the tile. An announcement rolls above her—beautiful, quick, and completely beyond her.
Her phone shows 3%.
Maya slips one hand inside her carry-on and finds Biscuit’s worn paw. The stuffed golden retriever cannot find Sora for her. He can, however, remind her to breathe.
“We made it,” Maya whispers. “Now we just have to survive the airport.”
Her phone vibrates.
마야!
Maya cannot read the whole message—but she does not need the whole language to begin.
Sora needs information.
They planned to meet but cannot see each other.
Maya recognizes who the message is for.
What does Sora need to know?
어디예요?
eo-di-ye-yo?
“Where are you?” Depending on the situation, it can also mean “Where is it?”
This is the question Sora uses because she cannot find Maya.
This is a listening aid, not a pronunciation score.
Maya looks up from the message and scans the crowd.
Someone behind her says her full name.
“Maya Bennett?”
She turns.
The person holding the company sign is not Sora.
